Meet The Team

Joel Boykin

Co-Owner, Founding Partner, and Executive Producer/Videographer

Joel Boykin is a trailblazing media executive and an award-winning photojournalist whose career is defined by historic “firsts” and a profound commitment to African American representation in media. As the Co-Owner and Founding President of Pulsebeat Media, she leads a premier multi-media outlet that stands as the only Detroit-based arts and entertainment news organization with a presence on traditional radio, television, and the web.

A Historic Legacy in Broadcasting
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Ms. Boykin holds the historic distinction of being the first Black female news videographer in Detroit television history. She further made national history as the first African American news videographer in the United States to be hired full-time by a major network affiliate. Her distinguished career includes tenures at ABC’s WXYZNBC’s WDIV, and PBS, earning her three Emmy Awards and two Associated Press Awards.

Leadership & Mentorship
As the first Detroit Bureau Chief for BET (Black Entertainment Television), Joel was instrumental in launching the national career of acclaimed news anchor Ed Gordon. Today, she continues to pay it forward as a professor at Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD), where she shares her decades of expertise with the next generation of storytellers.

Signature Productions & Awards
At Pulsebeat Media, Joel produces and directs the NABJ “Salute to Excellence” award-winning and Emmy-nominated series, PULSEBEAT WITH GREG DUNMORE. This program made history as the first arts and entertainment show to receive the “Salute to Excellence” honor from the National Association of Black Journalists.

Her expansive portfolio also includes:

Greg Dunmore

Greg Dunmore, widely known as “Dr. Entertainment,” is a premier multi-media journalist and the longest-running entertainment reporter consistently working in Detroit today. As a partner at Pulsebeat Media alongside Emmy-winning videographer Joel Boykin, Dunmore executive produces the historic series Pulsebeat with Greg Dunmore (formerly Greg Dunmore’s Hot Happenings!!!). The program holds the unique distinction of being the only arts and entertainment show to win the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) “Salute to Excellence” Award.

Beyond his media ventures, Dunmore is the President of THE POWER POINT GROUP, LLC, a specialized professional development consultancy and public speaking agency. A sought-after workshop speaker, he leverages his extensive industry knowledge to mentor and train professionals across various sectors. He also serves as President of Jazzjewels.tv, an online broadcast-quality media outlet and special markets promotional agency.

Cultural Stewardship & Honors
An Ivy League graduate of Cornell University and the National Autonomous University of México, Dunmore’s work is deeply rooted in cultural advocacy. He managed the careers of “Great American Songbook” masters Jo Thompson and Harvey Thompson and produced the Emmy-nominated, Telly, and Beacon Award-winning special Detroit Jazz Jewels.

His honors include the Detroit City Council’s Outstanding Detroiter AwardWho’s Who of Black Detroit, and the Dr. Charles H. Wright Museum Award of Excellence. He is a founding member of the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force, a voting member for the Grammy Awards (NARAS), Society of Professional Journalists, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dunmore’s professional philosophy is captured in his mantra: “It’s not about the MOMENT; it’s about the MOVEMENT!!!!”

Derrick Simpson

Director of Production and Technical Services

Derrick Simpson is a technical architect in multimedia production, currently serving as the Director of Production and Technical Services. A proud Detroit native, Derrick’s career has left a significant mark on the creative landscapes of Chicago and Los Angeles, where he is recognized as an elite video and magazine layout technician.

With deep roots in the comic book industry, Derrick has collaborated with icons such as Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks) and Derek Dingle (Milestone Comics). Among his most notable career milestones is his contribution to the digital colorization of the history-making theatrical poster for Marvel’s Black Panther.

Driven by a commitment to technical excellence, Derrick thrives on the high-stakes demands of entertainment journalism. His philosophy is simple: “The show must go on—but it won’t without my input.”

Michelle Parizon

Director of Strategic Engagement & Field Producer

Michelle Parizon is a powerhouse in media and strategic communications. As the Director of Placement and Strategic Engagement and a Field Producer at PULSEBEAT MEDIA, she blends corporate strategy with creative storytelling.

Her diverse career spans leadership roles at Digital Detroit Media, where she served as Global Vice President of Community Engagement, and the BUILD Institute, where she spearheaded marketing and branding for the entrepreneurial community. Michelle’s deep roots in Detroit broadcasting include high-impact tenures at WDIV-TVGannett Broadcasting, and WXON-TV.

Beyond the boardroom, Michelle is a dedicated educator and author. She serves as an adjunct instructor at Wayne County Community College, teaching English and Speech, and has developed corporate training modules for global brands like McDonald’sComcast, and UAW Chrysler. She is also the author of the empowering self-help guide, “Loving Me, Blocking Him: A Young Woman’s Guide to Texting, Dating, and Breaking Up,” which features a foreword by Myra Anderson.

She holds a degree in Mass Communication from Wayne State University and studied Telecommunication at Michigan State University.
